Chiribaya Museum

This museum shows the close collaboration between the municipality of El Algarrobal district in Ilo and Centro Mallqui. It presents the cultural history of Ilo, especially the period of the Chiribaya culture that developed between AD 800 and 1400 which extended as far south as northern Chile and as far north as the province of Caravelí in Arequipa.

In carefully controlled environments, the museum exhibits mummies extraordinarily preserved due to conditions of the desert. The aridity and high salinity of the soil promote the spontaneous mummification and preservation of organic materials which in turn provides a great opportunity for biological and archaeological research.
