CENTRO MALLQUI AMAZONAS

The activities in the northeastern part of Peru started in 1997 after the fortuitous discovery of the Chachapoya-Inca mausoleums in Laguna de los Cóndores. Initially the research project developed by Centro Mallqui only intended to register the site. However, after evaluating intense damage cause by looters, as well as the adverse environmental conditions and improper conduct of visitors who manipulated the archaeological materials, Centro Mallqui developed an emergency rescue project. With the permission of the National Institute of Culture of Perú, they began to both preserve and protect the artifacts recovered.

The archaeological work on this funeral site has promoted other projects and programs of a scientific nature, as well as programs in cultural management, education, and community development.
